Staff Attorney: Transgender Law Center

The Opportunity

This position is within TLC’s litigation team and will focus on investigating, developing and litigating cases on behalf of trans and gender-nonconforming people.

Primary Responsibilities
• Investigate and develop potential new cases, including corresponding with and meeting with potential clients, conducting research, finding and reviewing records, and drafting demand letters.
• Develop litigation strategy, manage relationships with co-counsel, perform legal research, and draft or edit briefs.
• With supervision, assume responsibility for all stages of litigation, including motion practice, discovery, trial, appeals, settlement negotiations, and settlement monitoring.
• As needed, join and support existing teams working on previously-filed litigation.
• When necessary, support TLC’s legal services project, including reviewing inquiries, researching local and state laws, policies, and procedures, and crafting responses with personalized legal information.
• Engage in direct advocacy on behalf of criminalized people by, for instance, calling or sending advocacy letters to public defenders or prison officials, and identifying other creative solutions.
• Develop and draft written resources including know-your-rights material and sample legal documents.
• Engage in education efforts for community members and attorneys, including speaking at conferences, trainings, and webinars.
• Support the work of the legal team and the organization generally.
• Other duties as assigned.
The position is full time and may include travel and occasional work at nights and on weekends.

Compensation

$80,000-$85,000 depending on experience and location.

Transgender Law Center (TLC) – Legal Services Project Senior Helpdesk Attorney

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is within TLC’s Legal Services Project, which works to break down barriers to legal access for trans and gender-nonconforming people by operating a Legal Information Helpdesk, Prison Mail Response Program, developing know-your-rights resources; and providing technical assistance and training to attorneys, government officials, and service providers.
The Legal Services Project Senior Attorney will take the lead managing TLC’s Legal Services Project. The Project includes all of the organization’s legal information, pro bono legal services, and know-your-rights education work, including the Legal Information Helpdesk, and the volunteer-staffed prison mail response program. This staff person will be generally responsible for ensuring those separate pieces are coordinated, as a project manager, and will also be directly responsible for several specific elements of the work. As currently structured and when fully staffed, TLC’s Legal Services Project also includes a Helpdesk Coordinator, a Prison Mail Coordinator, and a Legal Assistant who also supports the broader legal team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

-The Helpdesk Attorney will assume primary responsibility for the Legal Information Helpdesk, including reviewing and responding to incoming inquiries, recruiting and training volunteers, maintaining an internal database of legal information and resources, and identifying and implementing improvements to Helpdesk operations.
-Maintain and update internal legal information database tracking most relevant laws and policies for all 50 states across a wide variety of issue areas (e.g., identity document updates, public accommodation nondiscrimination protections, criminal defense, and other issues)
-Recruit, onboard, and supervise volunteers and interns to support the Helpdesk.
-Seek out innovative ways to improve the delivery of legal information and assistance to TGNC community members.

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) seeks a a dynamic attorney and manager to lead a team of attorneys and support staff providing high-quality legal services to help homeless veterans with disabilities access critical income-support benefits. The LGBTQ & HIV Advocacy Project is a general practice unit designed to provide comprehensive legal services in a single location for people living with HIV/AIDS and the LGBTQ community. The staff attorney will be responsible for litigation, advocacy, community outreach, and education throughout Brooklyn and sometimes in other boroughs when collaborating with our community partners.

There is a significant community outreach component to the work, including client intake at regular outreach clinics, sometimes after-hours; establishing relationships with community-based organizations and governmental entities that serve PLWHA and LGBTQ populations, including attending community-centered meetings and events after-hours and on weekends; and representing clients in a number of courts and administrative fora, primarily Housing Court, NY Supreme Court, Social Security hearings, and the Commission on Human Rights. Project staff attorneys regularly make home and hospital visits to meet with clients.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

· License to practice law in New York with a minimum of five (5) years of legal experience;
· Substantial experience working with communities affected by HIV/AIDS and/or the LGBTQ community;

· 1-10 years: $73,593 -$96,664
· 11-20 years: $98,875 – $116,730

The Los Angeles LGBT Center – Attorney Manager- Community Legal Clinics

The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s is hiring an Attorney Manager of Community Legal Clinics.

During fixed weekly legal clinic office and walk-in hours at each of the 5 Center sites referenced above, the Attorney Manager, Community Legal Clinics, will meet with community members seeking direct legal services. The Attorney Manager will provide intakes and/or consultations; identify and triage legal and other urgent issues; answer legal questions; assist community members in accessing other Legal Services Department projects, clinics, pro-se workshops, and volunteer attorneys; and make referrals to other service providers inside and outside the Center.

The Attorney Manager will also provide direct oversight and development of the legal clinic office and walk-in hours at each location and remotely, with the focus being on the development of an increased capacity to provide additional legal services that are directly responsive to the current community needs at each site. Important collaborations include working with the Legal Services Operations Manager, who will allocate 40 % of their time to assist the Attorney Manager; the Legal Services Director, who will provide ongoing supervision and mentoring; staff from each project, who will have designated hours in which they provide on-call expertise; and the Volunteer Resources Department.
