2023 ABA DEI Virtual Summit

NTBA co-chair D Dangaran will be moderating a CLE panel at this year’s ABA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Summit, which takes place October 23-24. The Summit is free for law students, $99 for ABA members, and $149 for non-members.

D’s panel, entitled “Lawyers in Drag and anti-Drag Legislation,” will discuss the discriminatory bills pushed by right-wing groups that are advancing in state legislatures. In this context of mounting challenges, the importance of preserving drag culture as a form of artistic expression and LGBTQ+ representation becomes ever more crucial. Drag is a challenge to the normative conceptions of gender under heteropatriarchal norms. This session is not a Gender 101 or Trans 101 session; rather, the panel presents the perspectives of experts and activists who see drag as one of many tools of a gender liberatory framework. The panel will highlight current challenges to those bills, as well as the experiences of two drag performers who also happen to be lawyers who currently or formerly fought for LGBTQ+ rights.

Fall Mentorship Mixer – October 26th

The NTBA Mentoring Committee invites all mentors, mentees, and any members interested in the mentoring program to a Spooky Social!  The social is an opportunity to chat casually about topics related to mentoring within the trans legal community and to get to know each other.  Attendees will also receive a scary snack ($30 Doordash voucher)!

2023 Transgender Law Institute

The Transgender Law Institute is a participatory space where lawyers, law students, and activists invested in or interested in learning more about the issues facing the trans community can build community and make commitments for collective action. TLI will be a space for everyone affected to discuss the state of affairs, ideate best next steps as a movement, and cultivate trans resiliency. TLI will take an equitable approach to centering trans lived experiences. With that in mind, we welcome everyone to join for any part of the Institute. The Transgender Law Institute is open to all approved attorneys and law students.

This year’s leaders for the 2023 TLI will NTBA Co-Chairs: Rafael Langer-Osuna (Squire Patton Boggs) and D Dangaran (Rights Behind Bars).

We have seen a stark rise in anti-trans legislation this year. This panel will provide an overview of the categories of anti-trans bills being advanced and signed into law and challenged in the court systems. The speakers will cover the bills that have sought to block trans people from receiving basic healthcare, education, legal recognition, and the right to publicly exist.

HOLI COLOR FEST RETURNS TO SAN FRANCISCO

IDEATE SF, The East Cut CBD, and TogetherSF bring an array of South Asian community organizations together to host the largest Holi color & dance festival in San Francisco- including South Asian LGBTQ led nonprofit ParivarBayArea, South Asian Bar Association of Northern California, Bhartiya Mandal Foundation, and Asha SF (under the global umbrella of Asha for Education).

South Asians across religions, regions, and languages celebrate Holi around the globe – Holi color festivals mark the arrival of Spring and the triumph of good over evil. This celebration will include festive colored Holi powders, live music, dance, stilt walkers, and delicious multicultural food and beverage vendors in the community marketplace.

National Black Trans Advocacy Conference & Awards Gala

The National Black Trans Advocacy Conference & Awards Gala is celebrating their 10th conference. The conference and awards gala is a distinct educational and empowerment program event, home to nearly 300 plus trans and gender non-conforming individuals, our family, friends, community allies and corporate partners from across the country who are focused on advancing black trans equality.


Folks look forward to the conference each and every year in part because the BTAC conference is a unique life changing (5) day program that furthers education, provides linkage to resources, community building and organizing, leadership development and celebration of diverse identities. The conference is going from April 25-April 30, 2023.


BTAC is host to over 50 workshops, seminars, CE courses, general sessions, open-forum discussions, and guest speaker presentations bringing together community educators and leaders to address the critical issues of access and parity in our society.


The conference is FREE and open to the public to gather, educate, learn, build and grow together in unity.

Fight to Legalize Drag

Tennessee has passed a dangerous restriction on free speech and the artistic expression of drag, and we MUST FIGHT BACK! Legalize Drag is a collective of drag artist legal professionals protesting attacks on the art of drag and trans, gender non-confirming, and queer communities. Our goals are to raise awareness, bring together queer folks, and provide a clear pathway to donate to this cause. We are raising money for the grassroots organizations inclusion tennessee, Tennessee Equality Project, and Protect Trans Health TN.

2nd San Francisco Transgender Immigrant Symposium- Resource Fair

Join us in community as we present the 2nd transgender immigrant symposium of San Francisco on April 6th, 2023 from 12p-5p at the San Francisco State Building on Golden Gate Avenue.

Chanel Lumiere supported in part by an arts grant from the City of West Hollywood, FLUX and AHF Pharmacy presents “100 Faces 100 Stories the collective” highlighting trans and non-binary artist and allies.

100 Faces 100 Stories the collective refers to the idea that art is within the process, and it is somehow in all of us. Will you allow yourself to unlock it? Transgender day of visibility (TDOV) is dedicated to education about transgender communities and important issues facing trans people across the country. It is also a day that celebrates Transgender individuals across the country. Artists and community groups coordinate events and educational opportunities to uplift the voices and experiences of transgender and non-binary (transgender/NB) communities.

This show is to share a moment where we can be as we are and express freely. This show is about being able to just have fun.

The panel will feature Lambda Legal Director of the Non-Binary and Transgender Rights Project Sasha Buchert; Rights Behind Bars Movement Lawyering and Litigation Fellow D Dangaran; and Baker Botts Pride in Action lawyers Maddy Dwertman and Scott Novak. Food and drinks will be provided throughout, and the panel will run from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

2023 NTBA SCOTUS Group Ceremony

Apply now to be part of the next group of NTBA members to be admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Our first group admissions ceremony, in January, in which the first ever cohort of 12 transgender attorneys stood before the full U.S. Supreme Court bench and was sworn in, was a widely heralded success and a much needed piece of good news amidst the many state level attempts to legislate the erasure of transgender Americans. So we’re doing it again.

On December 6, 2023 we will again bring 12 transgender attorneys from across the nation before the Court to be sworn in, a powerful statement showing that we are an important part of the legal system.

Qualifications
You must be admitted to the practice of law in your home state for a minimum of three years. You must be able to appear in Washington DC early in the morning of December 6, 2023. You’ll have to fill out an application form and get it back to us by June 30, 2023. The fee for admission to the Supreme Court Bar is $200.00, and the admission is lifetime.

In the past the NTBA has paid the admission fee for those in financial need.

Black LGBTQ+ Legal Professionals Caucus

In 2021, the National Bar Association’s LGBTQ+ Division and the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association embarked on an exciting new joint endeavor: the Black LGBTQ+ Legal Professionals Caucus. This Caucus serves as a networking and supportive space for Black- and LGBTQ-identifying lawyers, judges, law students, paralegals, and other legal professionals to work together across organizations for mutual success. In 2023, the group plans to resume meeting virtually in a safe and supportive community, with annual in-person meetings and a Caucus dinner to be held in connection with the LGBTQ+ Bar’s annual Lavender Law® Conference and Career Fair.  From time to time, the Caucus may hold educational, entertainment, and CLE events, which will be open to all members of both the NBA and the LGBTQ+ Bar, including allies.

All Black LGBTQ+ legal professionals are invited to join the Caucus by completing the membership form below. Please note: you must affirm on the form that you are (1) Black-identifying, (2) a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and, (3) in the legal profession. Once approved, you will be added to a Google Groups listserv for ease of communication; only Caucus members, LGBTQ+ Bar staff, and NBA LGBTQ+ Division Board members will have access to posts on the listserv.

The rights and even existence of transgender people continue to come under heavy fire in many states. California continues to lead the way on protective laws and policies, including a recent youth sanctuary law.

What’s coming in 2023 state legislative sessions? What’s the best way to fight for trans rights on the ground? Do constitutional principles both underpin and endanger trans rights? SCOTUS Swearing In Ceremony

On November 30, 2022, our first ever ceremony inducting 10 members into the US Supreme Court bar is scheduled for an in-person ceremony. We will communicate any updates via email, our social media platforms and our website.

The 2022 Transgender Law Institute (TLI) is coming to you again as part of the annual Lavendar Law Conference. This year, the conference will be held in-person in Los Angeles, California from July 27 to the 29th, with TLI falling on the 29th.
